## Metal vs Plastic Rugby Studs - What's the Difference?

Metal screw-in studs are the standard for soft ground play - they penetrate wet, heavy natural grass to give the grip needed for contact and open play. They come in various lengths, typically 15mm, 18mm and 21mm, with longer studs used in heavier, wetter conditions. Plastic studs are used on firm ground and harder surfaces. They're typically fixed on FG boots rather than screw-in, but some boots take plastic screw-in studs as an alternative to metal for summer conditions or artificial pitches. ## Stud Length Guide - Which Length Do You Need?

Stud length makes a practical difference to performance and choosing the wrong length is a common mistake. Here's how it breaks down:  
15mm studs suit firmer natural grass and early-season conditions when the ground hasn't fully softened. 18mm is the most widely used all-round length for standard UK club pitches through most of the season. 21mm studs are for the heaviest, wettest conditions - deeply saturated pitches where shorter studs don't penetrate deeply enough to provide reliable grip.  
Most boot manufacturers supply 18mm studs as standard. Carrying a set of 21mm studs in the kit bag for the worst days of the season is worthwhile, particularly for forwards who need maximum grip in the scrum.

## Rugby Boot Laces

Rugby boot laces are straightforward but worth getting right - a lace that snaps five minutes before kickoff is one of the more avoidable problems in the game.
