## Classic Rugby Shirts vs Vintage Rugby Shirts - What's the Difference?

The terms get used interchangeably, but they mean slightly different things and it's worth being clear. Classic [rugby shirts](https://www.rugbystuff.com/collections/rugby-shirts "Rugby Shirts") are new-production garments built in a traditional style - hooped designs, heavier cotton fabrics, collars, the kind of shirt that looks like rugby looked before the game went professional. They're not old shirts. They're new shirts made to feel old, and they're the most popular category on this page.  
  
Vintage rugby shirts, strictly speaking, refers to genuinely old shirts from previous decades - the heavy cotton match jerseys of the 1970s and 80s, worn and washed and full of history. We don't sell second-hand or used rugby shirts. What you'll find here are new shirts made in a vintage spirit, using traditional design principles and fabrics that reference the amateur era of the game rather than modern performance kit.

## Traditional Rugby Shirts - Cotton, Collars and Hoops

The traditional rugby shirt is a specific thing. Heavy cotton or cotton-blend fabric. A proper collar - button placket, not a crew neck. Wide hoops in club or nation colours. Long sleeves. It's the shirt that dominated rugby from the Victorian era through to the mid-1990s, when synthetic performance fabrics took over and the game went fully professional.

## Vintage Rugby Polo Shirts
