South Africa are the first of the 20 competing nations to release their 2019 Rugby World Cup jersey, in partnership with Asics.
The RWC 2019 Boks jersey has a more traditional olive green and orange gold look, a design that harks back to the 1995 Rugby World Cup winning side.
The new Springboks jersey, which is available to pre-order now, was designed with unique characteristics and features to compliment the playing style and technical requirements of the Boks.
“It’s a momentous year as the Springboks aim to win our third World Cup in Japan. Every little detail counts and that includes all the focus and effort put in by ASICS into making this the most advanced jersey for the Boks to wear in Japan and support them in their quest to reach their goal.” Jurie Roux, CEO of SA Rugby.
The shirt will be seen onfield for the first time when South Africa open their World Cup campaign against New Zealand on 21 September. The 2 sides are in Pool B alongside Italy, Namibia and Canada.
“I don’t want to be restricted by anything when playing. The jersey is the perfect balance between fast and strong – and it’s challenging to reach that. ASICS have produced a jersey that not only meets but surpasses expectations of what we wear on the pitch.” Tendai "Beast" Mtawarira
One of the complaints about the 2 previous South Africa Rugby World jerseys had been the lack of a Springbok on the front of the shirt.
This is due to World Rugby’s commercial requirements for playing shirts, and the Springbok emblem will again move to the left sleeve of the jersey, with the King Protea, Asics logo and the RWC 2019 crest on the chest.
The right sleeve will feature the Webb Ellis Trophy logo, along with the years 1995 and 2007 to celebrate South Africa's previous World Cup victories.
