2022 will see a brand new incarnation of Super Rugby, with 2 brand new sides, and one returning.
The newly created Fijian Drua and Moana Pasifika franchises successfully bid for places in the new Super Rugby Pacific competition, while Australian side the Force are back following their exclusion from Super Rugby at the end of the 2017 season.
Gone are Argentina's Jaguares and the Sunwolves of Japan while the South African sides Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers will no longer be part of the competition, having moved to the northern hemisphere's United Rugby Championship for the 2021/22 season.
It all kicks off on 18th February 2022, with 14 rounds of matches, before the top 8 sides qualify for the playoffs.
Adidas have brought out some stunning shirts for this new competition, so let's get stuck right in!
A bold, wave-inspired graphic, the 2022 Blues rugby jersey celebrates the migrations that gave birth to New Zealand. The shirt represents the meeting point of the four tides – as it does at Cape Reinga in the Far North of Te Tai Tokerau (Northland), where the tides of Te Moana nui a Kiwa (the Pacific) and Te Tai o Rēhua (the Tasman Sea) converge.
The home jersey pays homage to the great migrations that are an integral part of New Zealand’s history, made possible by the waters that surround the region.
Bathed in the rich tradition of Māori storytelling. This vibrant Chiefs rugby jersey uses ngā hihi o te rā (The Rays of the Sun) and kowhaiwhai (geometric swirls) to tell a story of power and unity and accentuate the Gallagher Chiefs home colours.
Always one of the more popular shirts, the rays of Tamanuiterā touch all parts of the Chiefs contributing unions radiating energy and power, depicted in the top half of the design.
The lower kōwhaiwhaiaccentuate the traditional home colours. Ornate swirls depict the flow of waterways throughout the region connecting the Chiefs whānau, sponsors, members, players, clubs and supporters of the Hamilton-based side.
Supported by their six regions, the Crusaders have returned to Super Rugby's summit time and again. This striking home jersey celebrates that unity with a bold graphic depicting the Southern Alps, the mountain chain that links the club's family.
The 2022 shirt reflects the collective strength of the region. The six peaks representing the collective mana of the provincial unions, Buller, Canterbury, Mid-Canterbury, South-Canterbury, Tasman and West-Coast.
Heritage Remixed. The 2022 Highlanders jerseys carry a modernised tartan pattern over the left shoulder, tonal on both home and away strips, to represent the many members of our organisation and wider community weaving together. This is a modern tartan design than the classic style, to acknowledge the modern face of the team.
These jerseys will certainly envoke a strong sense of nostalgia amongst fans of a certain vintage, with the colour palette and pattern a throwback to the late 1990s and early 2000s.
A rugby classic, re-energised. Sporting a swirling graphic that will be familiar to seasoned Hurricanes fans, this adidas home jersey spins up a late-'90s look, including the blue 3 stripes. The new jersey designs have been specially crafted to tell a story relevant to the Hurricanes club and the region.
The hurricane pattern originates at the logo and represents the mighty winds of the region, a source of strength and a reflection of the team’s unstoppable momentum.
