What is Oxen Metasock Technology?
The Metasock is Oxen's defining feature and what separates them from every other rugby boot on the market. Where conventional boots use a fixed upper built on a standardised last - which means your foot either fits the last well or it doesn't - the Metasock uses an integrated Lycra sock construction that conforms to the shape of your foot. The result is a close, second-skin fit that reduces internal movement, eliminates pressure points from a boot that doesn't suit your foot shape, and allows natural flex through the foot and ankle.
It's particularly valuable for players with wider feet or unusual foot shapes who have always found conventional boots uncomfortable. The Metasock doesn't require a break-in period in the same way - it adapts to you from the first session rather than the other way around. We regularly carry discounted Oxen stock including Metasock and Meta X colourways at reduced prices. Browse our rugby boots sale for current offers.
The Oxen Metasock Range - SG, FG and AG
The Metasock boot is available across three outsole configurations, covering every surface you're likely to play on.
Metasock SG
The soft ground version uses metal screw-in studs for wet, heavy natural grass - the standard choice for most UK club players through the main season. The Metasock SG combines the adaptive upper with a six-stud mix outsole suited to backs and mobile forwards. Also availble in 8 stud for props and second-rows.
Metasock FG
The firm ground version uses moulded rubber studs for harder, drier pitches in summer and on artificial surfaces where metal studs aren't appropriate. Same Metasock upper, different outsole.
Metasock AG
The artificial ground version is specifically configured for 3G and 4G pitches - a shorter, denser stud pattern optimised for the artificial surface rather than natural grass. If your club trains on a 3G pitch year-round, the AG is worth considering alongside an SG boot for matchdays.
Oxen Meta X
The Meta X is Oxen's performance SG boot and the more accessible take on the Metasock concept. It uses a PU upper for structure and protection combined with an integrated Lycra metasock that wraps the foot in a close, adaptive fit. The dual-layer construction gives you the stability needed for physical play without restricting natural movement through the foot and ankle - a meaningful difference for players who need to carry and drive as well as move.
Oxen Raptor - For Forwards
The Raptor is Oxen's forward boot, built for props, locks and back row forwards who need an 8-stud configuration for scrummaging and sustained contact. Like the Metasock range, the Raptor uses Oxen's PU upper but with a more traditional construction. The Raptor Elite and Raptor Pro sit at the top of the range in terms of construction and materials.
Are Oxen Rugby Boots Good?
The honest answer is yes, for the right player. The Metasock construction divides opinion - players who have always struggled with conventional boot fit tend to rate them very highly because the adaptive upper solves problems that no amount of sizing up has fixed. Players who are happy with their current boots and just want a straightforward option may not feel the difference as acutely.
Oxen are a British brand with a growing following at club level, particularly among props, locks and players with wider or unusual foot shapes. The quality of construction is strong, the technology is genuinely innovative, and they're not just repackaging an existing football boot with a different colourway.
