Who Should Wear 8 Stud Rugby Boots?
Eight stud rugby boots are designed for forwards - specifically front row and second row players who need maximum traction in heavy conditions. The front six studs give stability through the forefoot during scrum engagement, which is why props and locks have worn this configuration for decades.
Back row forwards are a different conversation. Flankers and number 8s who cover ground and work the open field are generally better served by a 6 stud boot or a hybrid sole. If you're a blindside who lives in rucks and mauls, an 8 stud boot makes sense. If you're an openside or a number 8 who carries like a back, a lighter boot will serve you better.
8 Stud Boots in the Range
Oxen the Raptor Elite and Metasock
Oxen Raptor and Metasock are both wide-fitting with a 10mm heel wedge that adds stability through the scrum. The Raptor Elite is the more traditional-looking boot; the Metasock steps it up with a knitted upper for a closer, more locked-in feel. Both are strong options for props who need genuine width.
Canterbury Stampede
The Canterbury Stampede is the go-to wide fit forward boot and the one most club props end up in. Available in Team, Pro and Elite versions, stepping up in materials and construction at each level. If wide fit is the priority, the Stampede is where you start.
Mizuno Waitangi and Morelia Neo
Two options here from Mizuno. The Waitangi is a solid, traditional 8 stud forward boot with a good wide fit - reliable and built for the front five. The Morelia Neo is the lighter alternative, still carrying the 8 stud configuration but in a significantly lighter package. It's probably better suited to hookers who need to cover more of the pitch than a prop does.
