      About Gilbert Rugby Balls

Gilbert have been producing rugby balls since 1823, when William Gilbert, a shoemaker based near Rugby School in Warwickshire, began making the hand-stitched leather balls used in the early game. The brand has been synonymous with rugby ever since and is currently the official ball supplier to the Rugby World Cup, the Gallagher Premiership and the URC. For most clubs, schools and players in the UK, Gilbert is the default choice for both match and training balls.

Gilbert Match Balls vs Training Balls

Gilbert match balls are produced to World Rugby specifications and are built to perform at competitive level. They use higher-grade outer panel material and tighter manufacturing tolerances than training balls. Training balls are designed for repeated use in practice - they take more contact and daily wear without degrading as quickly. For most club players, a training ball is the practical everyday choice.

      Gilbert Rugby Ball Sizes

Gilbert produce rugby balls across all standard sizes: size 3 for younger junior players, size 4 for older juniors, and size 5 for adult and senior rugby as well as mini and midi balls. As a rough guide, size 3 suits players aged 6 to 9 years old, size 4 from 10 to 14, and size 5 from 15 upwards.
