Traditional Rugby Socks vs Grip Socks - What's the Difference?

Traditional rugby socks are the full-length, over-the-calf socks that have been part of rugby kit for as long as the game has existed. They come in hooped or plain designs, match your club or team colours, and are worn pulled up over the base of the shin. They don't have the silicone grip associated with grip socks -  if that's what you're after, we stock those separately on our grip socks page.

For most players, both have a place in the kit bag. Traditional socks for matchday when you need to match the club strip, grip socks underneath or in combination when traction is the priority.

What to Look for in a Rugby Sock

      Length and Fit

Rugby socks should reach above the calf and stay there. A sock that rolls down during play is annoying and potentially a safety issue if it exposes your shin. Look for a reinforced cuff and a snug fit around the ankle. Most brands size by UK shoe size, so use that as your starting point rather than S/M/L sizing which varies between manufacturers.

      Cushioning

Cushioned soles make a difference over the course of a full match or training session. Most performance rugby socks include some degree of cushioning underfoot, which helps with impact absorption and reduces the friction that leads to blisters. If you're buying for a player who's on their feet for long sessions, cushioning is worth prioritising.

      Durability

Rugby socks take a lot of wear. Repeated washing, studs catching the fabric, playing through winter in all conditions - cheaper socks can start to look rough within a season. Look for reinforced toe and heel sections, which hold up considerably better over time.

      Rugby Socks by Brand

      Canterbury

Canterbury is the go-to for traditional rugby socks at club level in the UK. Their club match socks are available in a wide range of colour combinations, making it straightforward to match most club kits. They also produce plain training socks that hold their shape wash after wash.

      Macron

Macron produce well-constructed rugby socks with a strong focus on fit and durability. Popular with clubs that run Macron kit deals, but worth considering regardless - the quality is consistently good and the range covers Macron sponsored teams.

      Precision Training

Precision Training offer rugby socks at a price point that makes them particularly popular for clubs buying in volume and for juniors who are still growing and need replacing more frequently. Solid construction without the premium price tag. They also produce compression sock sleeves, which are worth knowing about if you're running grip socks underneath your match socks - the sleeve goes over the top, holds everything in place, and keeps the look clean on matchday.

      Rugby Socks for Kids

Junior rugby socks follow the same principles as adult socks but are sized for smaller feet and shorter calves. We stock kids' rugby socks across the main brands in the same colour ranges as the adult versions - useful when you need a junior player to match the rest of the team. Sizing is typically by UK shoe size, starting from around a UK 3-6 for juniors.
